49 CFR 383.111(a)(4) (Basic control — putting the vehicle in motion and stopping); AAMVA CDL Manual Sec. 2.2.1, p.2-8
Why This Matters
Spinning the drive wheels on a slippery surface is one of the most common ways new commercial drivers lose control of a heavy vehicle, since the loss of traction can happen very suddenly. Gradual acceleration gives the driver time to react before a small loss of grip becomes a bigger control problem.
