Who this is for
New drivers getting a Class A or B CDL: ELDT theory is a federal requirement before your skills test. ELDT.IO covers the theory piece; your school or BTW provider handles the rest.
Upgrading from Class B to A: you only need the Class A-specific theory, not the full course. Shorter, and covers only what's new to you.
Adding hazmat to an existing CDL: theory and the state knowledge test are the ELDT.IO piece, no skills test, no school. TSA's separate security threat assessment is still required before you can test, handled directly with TSA after you finish ELDT theory.
Whichever one is you, it's $15, self-paced, and reported to FMCSA the moment you pass.
Why It's $15 or Less
When the ELDT rule came in, I watched new drivers get charged a hundred or a hundred and fifty dollars for a theory course that is a formality. You have to have it, but it is not worth that.
So I built this. Fifteen dollars (or as low as $8 in bulk) covers the hosting and the FMCSA reporting and keeps the site running. It is not a big money maker. It gets you to your permit and your job.
I hold a Class A CDL with hazmat and tanker endorsements. I have run reefers, lowbeds, dump trucks, and fire apparatus. I am a state fire instructor. I built this course because it did not exist when I needed it.
Federal Compliance
ELDT.IO is a registered training provider with the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Our curriculum covers all theory topics required by federal regulation. FMCSA lists providers on the registry; they do not approve or accredit them. Registered is the accurate word.

How much does ELDT cost?
ELDT.IO charges $15 once. Take one course or all four, Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and hazmat theory, with no subscription. Other FMCSA-registered providers charge $20 to $249 per course for the same federally required topics.
What does the ELDT curriculum cover?
The ELDT curriculum is set by 49 CFR Part 380 and differs by course: Appendix A for Class A, Appendix B for Class B, and Appendix E for the hazmat endorsement. Every ELDT.IO course covers 100% of the required curriculum topics for its course, organized into self-paced units with checkpoints and a final assessment.
How long does the ELDT theory course take?
Most drivers finish a class course in a day or two of study at their own pace. There is no federal minimum number of hours for theory. You have to pass the assessment with 80% or better, and you can work through the units on your phone whenever you have time.
Can I do ELDT before I have my CDL permit?
Yes. Federal rules require ELDT theory to be completed before you take the CDL skills test or the hazmat knowledge test for the H endorsement. Many drivers do theory first, then get the permit, then do behind-the-wheel training.
Do I need ELDT for hazmat if I already have a CDL?
If you are adding an H endorsement for the first time, yes, you need hazmat ELDT theory even with an existing CDL. If you already hold an H endorsement and are renewing it, ELDT is not required.
Does my ELDT completion expire?
No. Federal regulation does not put an expiration date on an ELDT completion record on the Training Provider Registry.
How do I know FMCSA received my completion?
We report it the moment you pass, not in two business days. Your state DMV checks the Training Provider Registry before your test.
Does this include behind-the-wheel training?
No. This is theory only. Behind-the-wheel training has to be done with a registered provider in person.
