Class B to A ELDT Upgrade Theory Course for $15
Already hold a Class B? The upgrade course skips everything you've already covered and teaches only the five units that are new for Class A. $15, same FMCSA Training Provider Registry reporting, same instant turnaround.
Do you need ELDT to upgrade from Class B to Class A?
Yes, but you do not need the full Class A theory. Under 49 CFR Part 380 Appendix A, drivers upgrading from a Class B CDL to a Class A CDL complete a shorter curriculum that covers only the Class A-specific topics. It assumes your existing Class B knowledge and does not repeat content you already know.
If you are applying for a first-time Class A CDL without an existing Class B, you need the full Class A theory course instead.
What the upgrade covers, and what it skips
The Appendix A upgrade curriculum covers the topics that are specific to Class A combination vehicles and not already in the Class B curriculum:
- Combination vehicle air brakes and systems
- Coupling and uncoupling procedures
- Backing combination vehicles
- Combination vehicle inspections
- Driving combination vehicles safely
It skips the general driving knowledge, hours of service, medical requirements, and other topics already covered in the Class B curriculum you completed. That is why it is only 5 units instead of 30.
Steps to upgrade from Class B to Class A
- Complete the upgrade ELDT theory: 5 units online, at your own pace. Your completion is reported to the FMCSA registry instantly when you pass.
- Complete BTW training on combination vehicles: Required under 49 CFR Part 380. Must be done in person with a registered behind-the-wheel provider. Find providers on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
- Pass the Class A CDL skills test: Pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle controls on a combination vehicle, and a road test. Scheduled through your state DMV.
- Class A added to your CDL: Your existing Class B and endorsements are retained.
Class B to Class A requirements
To upgrade, you need:
- A valid Class B CDL (active or recently expired, confirm with your state DMV)
- Completed ELDT upgrade theory (Appendix A), reported to the FMCSA registry
- Completed BTW training on combination vehicles
- Pass the Class A skills test
How much it costs to upgrade from B to A
ELDT theory at ELDT.IO is $15. That is the only piece we handle. BTW training on combination vehicles varies by provider. Add your state CDL upgrade or endorsement fee at the DMV. The theory is the smallest cost in the whole process.
Keeping your endorsements when you upgrade
Most endorsements transfer when you upgrade at the DMV, hazmat (H), tanker (N), air brakes (if applicable). Confirm the exact process with your state DMV, as transfer procedures vary slightly by state. In most cases you keep what you earned.
Reported to the FMCSA registry
Your completion is reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry the moment you pass the final assessment. Your state DMV can see it immediately. There is no waiting period. Verify it yourself here.
Questions about the Class B to A upgrade
Do I need full Class A ELDT if I already have a Class B?
No. You complete the shorter Appendix A upgrade curriculum, 5 units covering only the Class A-specific topics.
How do I upgrade my Class B CDL to Class A?
Upgrade ELDT theory (done here, 5 units) + BTW training on combination vehicles + Class A skills test at your state DMV.
My Class B CDL is old or lapsed. Does the upgrade curriculum still apply?
Yes. ELDT applicability is based on when you apply for the upgrade, not when you originally got your Class B. If you are upgrading to Class A on or after February 7, 2022, you complete the shorter upgrade theory regardless of how old your Class B is.
Is behind-the-wheel required for the upgrade?
Yes. BTW training on combination vehicles is required under 49 CFR Part 380. ELDT.IO handles theory only.
Do I keep my endorsements when I upgrade?
Generally yes, hazmat, tanker, and other endorsements typically transfer. Confirm the exact process with your state DMV.
How much does it cost to upgrade from Class B to Class A?
$15 for the ELDT theory here. BTW training costs vary. Add your state CDL upgrade fee.
Can I get a Class B job with a Class A CDL?
Yes. A Class A allows you to drive Class B and Class C vehicles as well.
