Hazmat ELDT Training Online for $15 (H Endorsement)
Hazmat is the one ELDT course where theory is the whole requirement, there's no skills test, just the FMCSA knowledge test at your DMV after you finish. Thirteen units, $15, covering 49 CFR Part 380 Appendix E, reported to the Training Provider Registry the second you pass.
Do you need ELDT for a hazmat endorsement?
Yes, for first-time applicants. Under 49 CFR Part 380.603, any driver applying for the hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time on or after February 7, 2022 must complete ELDT theory before taking the state CDL knowledge test for hazmat.
Renewal is different. If you already held the H endorsement before February 7, 2022, renewing it does not require ELDT. The requirement applies to first-time applicants only.
Existing CDL does not exempt you. Having a Class A or Class B CDL does not waive the hazmat ELDT requirement. The theory is required for the endorsement itself, not the base license.
What the hazmat ELDT course covers
The hazmat ELDT curriculum is set by federal regulation under 49 CFR Part 380 Appendix E. It is a separate curriculum from the Class A or Class B theory. You can complete it on its own without taking Class A or B theory first.
The 13 units cover:
- Hazardous materials regulations overview
- Hazard classes and identification numbers
- Shipping papers and emergency response information
- Marking, labeling, and placarding requirements
- Loading, unloading, and segregation rules
- Bulk packaging requirements
- Emergency response procedures
- Security awareness and security plans
Every topic that appears on the state hazmat CDL knowledge test is covered in this course.
How long the hazmat ELDT course takes
Federal rules do not set a minimum hour requirement for ELDT theory. The course has 13 units. Most drivers finish in a few hours to a full day depending on pace. You can stop and resume at any point. The course works on any phone, tablet, or computer.
Hazmat endorsement cost, start to finish
Here is what getting the H endorsement actually costs:
- ELDT theory: $15 at ELDT.IO (DLA charges $20, others charge $50–$249 for the same federal curriculum)
- TSA threat assessment fee: Set by the TSA directly. This is separate from ELDT and paid to the TSA, not to your training provider
- State CDL knowledge test fee: Varies by state, typically $5–$25
The theory is the only piece ELDT.IO handles. The TSA background check and state knowledge test are separate steps.
How to get your hazmat endorsement, step by step
- Complete ELDT hazmat theory: Enroll here, finish the 13 units, pass the final assessment. Your completion is reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry immediately.
- Apply for TSA threat assessment: Go to the TSA website and submit your application. This includes a criminal history check. The TSA assessment typically takes several weeks.
- Take the state CDL knowledge test for hazmat: Schedule at your state DMV or driver licensing office. The test is in person, typically 30 questions, 80% passing score.
- Endorsement added to your CDL: Once you pass the knowledge test and clear TSA, the H endorsement is added to your CDL at the DMV.
The hazmat knowledge test: what to expect (free practice test)
The state hazmat CDL knowledge test is typically 30 questions. Most states require an 80% passing score. Questions cover hazard classes, shipping papers, placarding, loading rules, and emergency response, the same topics in the ELDT theory course.
A few practice questions to test yourself:
Q: Which hazard class covers flammable liquids?
A) Class 2 B) Class 3 C) Class 4 D) Class 5
Show answer
B: Class 3. Flammable liquids such as gasoline and diesel fall under Hazard Class 3.
Q: What document must accompany a hazardous materials shipment?
A) Bill of lading only B) Shipping papers with hazmat description C) Carrier manifest D) TSA approval letter
Show answer
B. Shipping papers must include the proper shipping name, hazard class, identification number, and packing group for every hazardous material in the shipment.
Q: When are placards required on a vehicle hauling hazardous materials?
A) Always B) Only when carrying 1,001 lbs or more C) Depends on hazard class and quantity D) Only on interstate routes
Show answer
C. Placarding requirements depend on the hazard class and the quantity being transported. Some classes require placards at any quantity (Table 1); others require them at 1,001 lbs or more (Table 2).
Hazmat and tanker together (the X endorsement)
The X endorsement on your CDL means you hold both hazmat (H) and tanker (N). Many liquid bulk hauling jobs require both. The good news: the tanker endorsement does not require ELDT under 49 CFR Part 380. You only need to complete ELDT theory for the hazmat side.
If you are going for both, complete hazmat ELDT first, then add the tanker endorsement through your state DMV, no additional theory required.
Is ELDT.IO legit? Verify us on the FMCSA registry
ELDT providers are registered, not approved, the FMCSA does not approve or endorse specific providers. It maintains a Training Provider Registry (TPR) of registered providers. ELDT.IO is listed on that registry.
You can verify our registration directly on the FMCSA website. Step-by-step instructions here.
Hazmat ELDT by state
The hazmat ELDT curriculum is set by federal regulation and is identical in every state. Your completion is reported to the national FMCSA registry and is valid regardless of which state DMV you test at. ELDT.IO completions are accepted in all 50 states.
A few state-specific notes on the knowledge test and endorsement process:
- Texas: Hazmat knowledge test is 30 questions at the DPS office. TSA fingerprinting locations throughout the state.
- Florida: Schedule the hazmat knowledge test at any DHSMV office. TSA check required before endorsement is issued.
- California: DMV requires TSA clearance before scheduling the knowledge test for hazmat.
- Ohio: BMV administers the knowledge test. ELDT completion must show in the TPR before testing.
- North Carolina: DMV requires the ELDT record in the TPR. Process otherwise follows the federal steps above.
If your DMV cannot see your completion, ask them to search by license number in the registry directly. Your record is there, here is how to find it.
Questions about hazmat ELDT
Is ELDT required for a hazmat endorsement?
Yes, for first-time applicants on or after February 7, 2022. Under 49 CFR Part 380.603, you must complete ELDT hazmat theory before taking the state CDL knowledge test. Renewal of an existing H endorsement does not require ELDT.
Do I need hazmat ELDT if I already have a CDL?
Yes. Having a CDL does not exempt you from hazmat ELDT. The requirement is for the endorsement itself. If you are adding H to your CDL for the first time after February 7, 2022, ELDT is required.
Is ELDT required to renew a hazmat endorsement?
No. Renewal of an H endorsement you already held before February 7, 2022 does not require ELDT. First-time applicants only.
How long is the hazmat ELDT course?
13 units, no federal minimum hours. Most drivers finish in a few hours to a day at their own pace.
How much is hazmat ELDT training?
$15 at ELDT.IO. That covers the theory only. The TSA fee and state knowledge test fee are paid separately.
Is the hazmat test hard? How many questions are on it?
Typically 30 questions, 80% passing score. The ELDT.IO course covers every topic on the test.
Can you take the hazmat test online?
The ELDT theory course is fully online. The state CDL knowledge test for hazmat must be taken in person at your DMV.
Does hazmat ELDT include the TSA background check?
No. The TSA threat assessment is separate and handled directly with the TSA after you finish ELDT theory.
Is there a separate ELDT for hazmat?
Yes. Hazmat ELDT is Appendix E under 49 CFR Part 380, a separate curriculum from Class A (Appendix A) or Class B (Appendix B). You can take it without completing Class A or B theory.
Is ELDT required for the tanker endorsement?
No. The N endorsement does not require ELDT. Only Class A, Class B, Class B-to-A upgrade, H, P, and S require ELDT theory.
Can you get a hazmat endorsement without a CDL?
No. The H endorsement is added to an existing CDL, but it is not limited to Class A or Class B. Under 49 CFR 383.91, a Class C CDL covers vehicles used to transport hazardous materials, so a Class C CDL holder can carry a hazmat endorsement too.
What disqualifies you from a hazmat endorsement?
The TSA conducts a threat assessment including a criminal history check. Certain felony convictions are disqualifying. See the TSA website for the current list.
How fast can you get a hazmat endorsement?
Theory in a day, reported instantly. The TSA threat assessment is the longest step, typically several weeks. After TSA clearance, schedule the state knowledge test and the endorsement is added at the DMV.
