How Much Does a Hazmat Endorsement Actually Cost?

People ask this expecting one number. There isn't one. A hazmat endorsement is three separate payments to three separate places, and only one of them is ours to answer.

Three buckets, three different places your money goes

Every hazmat endorsement runs through the same three pieces, no matter where you live. They don't get paid to the same place, and they're not the same price.

  • ELDT hazmat theory training, paid to a training provider like us
  • A TSA security threat assessment, paid to TSA or its enrollment vendor
  • Your state's hazmat knowledge test and licensing fee, paid to your state DMV

The piece we actually handle

Hazmat ELDT theory is required under 49 CFR Part 380, Appendix E, and it's what we sell for $15. It covers the federally required curriculum and the assessment you have to pass, minimum 80%, before you've touched the other two pieces.

The background check nobody skips

Separate from training entirely, every hazmat applicant goes through a federal security threat assessment under 49 CFR Part 1572, run by TSA. In practice, that means getting fingerprinted and showing ID at an enrollment center, through what's called Universal Enrollment Services, TSA's nationwide network run by a contracted vendor.

Some states call the application for this step HAZPRINT. Tennessee's own DMV page uses the term directly. Others don't use that name at all. Don't go looking for a company called HAZPRINT the way you'd look for us on the TPR. Look for the TSA threat assessment itself, whatever your state happens to call the paperwork.

There's no single federal price tag on this step. It varies by state and by vendor, and we're not the right source for that number, your state's DMV page or TSA's own site is.

The test your state actually runs

Last piece: a state-administered hazmat knowledge test, plus whatever licensing fee your state charges to add the endorsement to your CDL. Federal law doesn't set this number either. It's entirely a state-by-state fee.

What federal law doesn't tell you

Here's something worth knowing before you plan the order of operations: nothing in Part 380 says you have to finish ELDT theory before starting the TSA background check, or the other way around. That sequencing is left to your state and your provider, not federal law. Check with your state DMV before assuming one has to come first.

What you can actually budget for today

We can tell you exactly what our piece costs, $15, right now, no surprise add-ons. The other two, we genuinely can't, because they're not ours to set. Anyone who quotes you one flat "hazmat endorsement price" covering all three is rounding in a direction that isn't yours.

Questions people ask

Is a hazmat endorsement expensive?

It depends which of the three required pieces you're pricing. ELDT hazmat theory training is typically the cheapest piece. The TSA background check and your state knowledge test both have their own separate fees that aren't set by the training provider and vary by state and vendor.

What is HAZPRINT?

HAZPRINT is a name some states use for the application tied to the federal TSA Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment, a security background check required under 49 CFR Part 1572. It's not a universal term, and it's not required by every state under that name, but the underlying federal background check, including fingerprinting through TSA's Universal Enrollment Services, applies nationwide regardless of what your state calls it.

Do I need a background check for hazmat?

Yes. Every hazmat endorsement applicant goes through a TSA security threat assessment under 49 CFR Part 1572, separate from and in addition to your ELDT theory training.
