Behind-the-Wheel Training: What to Expect
ELDT.IO covers theory only. Behind-the-wheel (BTW) training, the hands-on part of entry-level driver training, has to happen in person, in a real vehicle, with a qualified instructor watching you do it. Nothing online, from us or anyone else, can substitute for that. This page explains what BTW training actually involves, and the one piece of ELDT you can knock out right now while you line up an in-person provider.
Why this can't be done online
Federal regulation requires BTW proficiency to be demonstrated, in a real vehicle, and confirmed by a human instructor who is actually present and able to observe you. A quiz question can test whether you know the correct following distance. It cannot confirm you can actually maintain it in traffic. That's the line between what ELDT.io teaches and what your in-person training provider confirms.
What a BTW instructor generally checks
The exact checklist depends on which endorsement or vehicle class you're training for; your in-person provider will have the specific one for your course. In general, expect your instructor to watch you demonstrate:
- Vehicle orientation: knowing your vehicle's dimensions, controls, and how to correctly adjust your seat and mirrors
- Pre-trip, enroute, and post-trip inspection, performed correctly and without prompting
- Safe handling of cargo, baggage, or any equipment specific to your vehicle type
- Passenger safety procedures, if you're training for a passenger-carrying vehicle, including a full safety briefing and correct handling of loading, unloading, and difficult situations
- Railroad-highway grade crossing procedure, performed correctly on an actual or simulated crossing
- Confirmation that the vehicle you train and test in matches the CDL vehicle group you're licensed for
Your instructor signs off each item individually. There's no partial credit and no way to study your way past a demonstration you can't actually perform; that's the point of doing it in person.
How this fits with your ELDT.IO theory course
Each theory module you complete here explains the rule and the reasoning behind a BTW requirement. Your in-person instructor confirms you can actually carry it out. Studying the theory first means you'll know exactly what's coming and why, before you ever get behind the wheel, and it's already done, so it's one less thing standing between you and your skills test.
