49 CFR 383.111(a)(6) (Backing); AAMVA CDL Manual Section 2.2.4, p.2-8
Why This Matters
Backing a large commercial vehicle is one of the highest-risk, lowest-visibility maneuvers a driver performs, since mirrors can never fully replace a direct view of what's behind the trailer. The manual's six rules, starting in the proper position, looking at your path, using mirrors on both sides, backing slowly, backing and turning toward the driver's side, and using a helper, work together: slow speed and the lowest gear buy time to react, and backing toward the driver's side lets you actually see out your window instead of guessing. These rules are core, frequently tested knowledge-test material.
