A student exits the bus and must cross the roadway in front of it, where are they instructed to stop and wait for the driver's signal?

AAMVA CDL Manual, Section 10.2.3 – Additional Procedures for Students That Must Cross the Roadway, pp. 10-4–10-5 (July 2017 revision); 49 CFR §383.123(a)(1)

Why This Matters

A child crossing in front of a school bus is in one of the most dangerous positions on the road, especially if drivers of other vehicles fail to stop for the flashing lights. Requiring the student to stop where the driver can see their feet gives the driver a precise, verifiable checkpoint before giving the signal to cross, rather than a vague sense that the student is "probably ready."
