You're loading compressed gas cylinders on a flatbed. According to federal requirements, how must the cylinders be secured?

Regulation

49 CFR 177.834(a) (general loading requirements); 49 CFR 177.840(a)(1) (cylinder position, restraint, and pressure-relief-device orientation for Division 2.1 material)

Why This Matters

A cylinder's valve is its weak point. An unrestrained cylinder that shifts or overturns, or a relief device that ends up submerged in liquid instead of vapor, can turn a routine load into a life-threatening equipment failure. Securing cylinders correctly, in either position, is what keeps that from happening.
