Do ELDT Practice Questions Count Toward Required Training?
Practice apps are everywhere, and plenty of them are genuinely useful for studying. None of them are ELDT. Here's why the distinction actually matters.

What the required assessment actually is
Under 49 CFR 380.715(a), your ELDT theory assessment has to come from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry, built on the actual Appendix A through E objectives for your course, with a minimum score of 80%. That specific result is what gets reported to FMCSA under 380.717.
A question bank on your phone doesn't report anywhere. It can't. It was never connected to the registry in the first place.
Useful for studying, not a substitute
That's not a knock on practice material. Working through extra questions before or during your actual ELDT course can genuinely help you understand the material faster. It just doesn't do the one thing that matters for licensing purposes: get submitted to FMCSA as your completed, assessed training.
A second test you'll still have to take
Here's the part that trips people up even more. The ELDT assessment isn't the only test in this process, and it's not the same one as your state's CDL permit knowledge test.
Your CLP knowledge test is required under 49 CFR 383.131, administered by your own state, and built from your state's own driver manual. Different part of the federal code, different authority giving the test, different source material.
Pass your ELDT assessment through your provider. Then study separately for your state's own knowledge test. They're related, but they're not the same hurdle.
Study with anything. Get certified through the real thing.
Use whatever practice tools actually help you learn the material. Just don't mistake finishing one for finishing the other. View our courses for the part that's actually reportable, $15 each.
Questions people ask
Can I skip ELDT if I pass a practice test?
No. ELDT theory under 49 CFR 380.715 must be completed and assessed through a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry, with a minimum 80% score, and that result is what gets electronically reported. A practice app outside that system has no reporting path and doesn't substitute for it.
Is the ELDT test the same as the CDL permit test?
No. The ELDT assessment, required under 49 CFR 380.715, is administered by your training provider. The CLP knowledge test, required under 49 CFR 383.131, is administered by your state and built from your state's own driver manual. They're two separate tests from two separate authorities.
Are practice questions still worth doing?
Yes, for studying. They just don't replace either the required ELDT assessment or your state's CLP knowledge test.
