How Long Does ELDT Theory Training Actually Take?

Most students finish ELDT theory the same day they buy it, about two out of three do, and nearly three out of four are done within 48 hours. The fastest recorded completion is 27 minutes flat.

Based on real purchase-to-certificate timestamps recorded on ELDT.IO so far. Full methodology and breakdown below.

How fast can it actually be done?

Twenty-seven minutes. That's the fastest Hazmat completion we've recorded, start to finish. Most people won't match that, and they don't need to, but it shows what's possible when you already know the material.

Fastest real completions on record, by course:

  • Hazmat Endorsement: 27 minutes
  • B-to-A Upgrade: 41 minutes
  • Class A: 1 hour 35 minutes
  • Class B: 1 hour 58 minutes

Nobody skips a section to hit those times. Every unit still has to be read, every checkpoint still has to be passed. Drivers who already live this material day to day just move through it fast, because none of it is new to them.

What's typical

Most students aren't racing. We pulled real timestamps from every completed order on ELDT.IO, the moment someone pays and the moment their certificate gets issued, and lined them up.

Almost two out of three are done within a single day.

  • 65.6% finish the same day they buy
  • 6.3% finish in a day or two
  • 10.9% finish within a week
  • 17.2% take longer than that

Add it up and about 72% are finished within 48 hours. The rest bought the course, got pulled into a job or a family thing, and came back to it later. Access doesn't expire, so that's a real option too, not a failure to finish.

For the students who do finish same-day, average total study time runs about 6.5 hours for Hazmat and 8.5 hours for Class A, around 6.7 hours combined across courses. That's total time across however many sittings it took, not one continuous block.

Why the range is so wide

ELDT theory isn't a video you sit through at 1x speed and call it done. It's real material with real checkpoints you have to pass. Someone who's spent years around trucks moves through certain sections faster than someone brand new to the industry. Both end up certified. Neither one gets a shortcut.

What to expect when you start

Set aside a few hours, not five minutes. This covers what 49 CFR Part 380 actually requires, it's not a box you check on your way out the door. It's also not a multi-day slog unless you want it to be. Sit down, work through it, and walk away with a certificate the same day.

Finishing theory isn't the finish line. You'll still need behind-the-wheel instruction with a real truck and a real instructor, that part can't happen online no matter how fast you move through the theory.
