Is Online ELDT Training Valid in All 50 States?
Yes, for the part that's actually federal. Here's exactly what that covers, and what it doesn't, so you're not caught off guard by the rest of the process.

One curriculum, not fifty
Under 49 CFR 380.601 and 380.603(a), ELDT sets a single minimum theory and behind-the-wheel curriculum that applies nationwide, to entry-level drivers in interstate and intrastate commerce alike. There are a handful of narrow, named exceptions written into the rule, certain restricted-CDL applicants and qualifying military personnel among them, but outside of those, it's one standard.
There's no Texas version of the theory requirement and no New Hampshire version. It's the same rule everywhere.
So what actually changes state to state
The part that genuinely varies is everything downstream of theory training. Your CLP knowledge test and your CDL skills test, required under 49 CFR 383.131, are administered by your own state, built from your own state's driver manual, and run under that state's own examiner procedures. Fees and scheduling for those steps are entirely state-set too.
"Valid everywhere" describes the online theory course. It doesn't describe your state's test fee, your state's scheduling window, or your state's specific paperwork.
What this means if you move, or test somewhere else
Because the ELDT theory curriculum isn't tied to a specific state, completing it doesn't lock you into testing in any particular place. What can differ is how smoothly your own state's DMV expects to see that completion reflected when you show up for your test, which is worth a quick confirmation with your state directly if your situation is anything but straightforward.
The part we can promise
Our course is the same curriculum no matter which state's CDL you're working toward. View our courses, $15 each, one course or all four.
Questions people ask
Is ELDT the same in every state?
The federal theory and behind-the-wheel curriculum under 49 CFR Part 380 is a single national minimum standard, with only narrow named exceptions. It does not vary state by state.
What still varies by state if ELDT is federal?
Your state's own CLP knowledge test and CDL skills test, required under 49 CFR 383.131, are administered by your own state using your state's own driver manual, and any related fees or scheduling are set by that state.
Can I use an online ELDT course if I'm testing in a different state than where I took the course?
Since the ELDT curriculum itself is a uniform federal requirement, the theory training isn't tied to a specific state. Confirm with your own state's DMV on their specific intake process, since the remaining state-administered steps can differ.
