Vehicle Operation, Mirrors & Maneuvering
20 free questions, part of the School Bus (S) Endorsement CDL practice test
This subtopic mixes AAMVA driving-technique material with two real federal standards: FMVSS 111 (49 CFR 571.111) for mirror systems and FMVSS 105 (49 CFR 571.105) plus 49 CFR 393.55 for antilock brakes. Mirror types, dart-out awareness, backing procedure, tail swing, and wind handling all come straight from the AAMVA CDL Manual. ELDT.io's free bank has 20 questions on this subtopic.

Questions about Vehicle Operation, Mirrors & Maneuvering
Which mirror shows the full side of the bus down to the rear tires?
The convex, or fisheye, mirror mounted below the flat mirror. It's intentionally distorted to give a wide-angle view of the whole side of the bus, per the AAMVA Manual.
Are school buses required to have antilock brakes?
Yes. Per FMVSS 105 (49 CFR 571.105) and 49 CFR 393.55, buses with hydraulic brakes built on or after March 1, 1999, and buses with air brakes built on or after March 1, 1998, must have ABS.
What is a "dart-out" and why is it taught with mirror training?
A dart-out is when a child suddenly runs out from a blind spot, often near the front or side of the bus. ELDT Unit D1.1 pairs mirror-system training with dart-out awareness because proper mirror use is the main tool for catching a child before they dart into the danger zone.
