Safe Driving & Operating Practices
19 free questions, part of the Passenger (P) Endorsement CDL practice test
Passenger endorsement candidates need to know bus-specific operating habits: wearing a seat belt on every trip under 49 CFR 392.16, making arrival and stop announcements, starting and stopping smoothly so standing riders don't get thrown around, and slowing well below the posted limit on banked curves because a bus doesn't grip the road like a car. These fall under the 49 CFR 383.117(a)(5) and (a)(6) knowledge topics, and ELDT.io has 19 free practice questions covering them.
Questions about Safe Driving & Operating Practices
When should a bus driver wear a seat belt?
Every time the bus is moving, no matter how short the trip. Going three blocks to the next stop isn't an exception under 49 CFR 392.16.
Why does smooth starting and stopping matter on a bus?
Riders, especially anyone standing, can be thrown off balance or fall if the driver brakes or accelerates abruptly. The CDL manual says to start and stop as gradually as traffic allows and to wait until riders are seated or holding on before pulling away.
