Questions about Driving, Parking & Emergency Response

How close to the road can I park a placarded truck?

Under 49 CFR 397.7, you cannot park within 5 feet of the traveled part of the road or the shoulder, except briefly for loading, unloading, or an emergency, and you still have to use warning devices.

Do I have to stop at every railroad crossing if my truck is not placarded?

No. The mandatory stop-look-listen procedure in 49 CFR 392.10 applies to placarded cargo tanks and certain other vehicles regardless of load, but an unplacarded straight truck carrying only a trace amount is generally not required to stop unless it falls into one of the listed categories.
