Questions about Shipping Papers, Documentation & Permits

Where do my shipping papers have to be while I am driving?

Under 49 CFR 177.817, they must be within your reach while your seat belt is fastened, or on the driver's seat, or in a holder mounted on the inside of the driver's door, while you are at the controls. When you step away from the vehicle, they can also be left on the driver's seat or in the door pocket.

What should I do if the shipper's certification box on the shipping paper is blank?

Do not sign it yourself and do not load. The shipper's certification under 49 CFR 172.204 has to be completed by the shipper, and signing it for them exposes you and your carrier to false statement liability.
