Questions about Hazmat Table & Classification

How many hazmat classes are there under the federal system?

Nine. The CDL Manual and 49 CFR 172.101 use nine hazard classes, and several, like Class 1 explosives and Class 2 gases, are split into divisions with their own rules.

What counts as class 9 hazmat?

Class 9 is the catch-all for materials that do not fit Classes 1 through 8, including consumer commodities and some environmentally hazardous substances. It still gets a full table entry, an ID number, and required markings like any other class.

What does "Forbidden" mean in Column 3 of the Hazardous Materials Table?

It means that material cannot be shipped by that mode under any normal exception. If a shipping paper lists a material marked Forbidden, you do not load it, period.
